A voice that sings
I’ve been listening to Karise Eden in the car for weeks now.
I keep pressing repeat to hear her sing Landslide.
And it’s only because that word "landslide" is resonating with me.
Because that’s what life felt like for a long while here. One big landslide. {But it's all good because we made it through and we're looking up at a golden sun now, and it feels like we can almost reach it}.
Truth is, I’m not listening to the lyrics at all really. Just pondering that word, and I’m getting lost in the rhythm of the song and in the melody of Karise’s amazing voice.
I love her voice. And Nina Simone’s. And Rachel from Glee’s.
But mostly as I listen I keep on thinking that her voice should be mine.
I’m convinced of this.
And then I sing. And I see the look on my husband’s face. His lips don’t move, but his expression says it all.
And I realise that no, I wasn’t blessed with a voice that should sing. Rather a voice that really really shouldn’t. But still, I sing. I can’t help it.
This week in the car as Karise and I did a duet, my two year old called out, "Mum no singing please, I try listen."
For the first time ever, I shut up. And gave thanks that my child is genetically wired to love me despite my singing.
Then I gave thanks that I kept my singing voice hidden from my husband until after he proposed.
Then I cursed. Because I am so convinced that I was meant to sing.
I have no idea why I got a singing voice that is relegated to nursery rhymes. And if I’m honest, even they don’t sound too flash.

Any talents you are so sure you were meant to have, but don’t? Can you sing?

Absoutely tone deaf here.
ReplyDeletePeople can't even recognise the songs I'm singing most of the time.
I was the only girl in Yr 7 not allowed in the choir.
Music was the only subject through school and uni that marred my damn near perfect reports.
My Dad was a pro drummer, my sister has the voice of an angel.
I don't know what went wrong!!
Can you tell I'm a little hung up on it?!
Like you, I sing anyway.
My students and family are very forgiving or tolerant - or i'm oblivious to their pain!!
:-) xx
Haha! Shar, I would have picked you for an amazing singer!! Shocked that you're just like me, actually :)
DeleteI love singing. I sing everywhere.. And I think I'm quite good honestly.. People tell me I'm good.. And I'm usually the winner in singing competitions BUT I wish I was a good swimmer. I'm helpless! The harder I try to go fast the slower I am. My favorite Walt Disney movie is The Little Mermaid... I have always dreamt of being a graceful swimmer... But I am NOT! When I watch the Olympic Games I die inside! Wahahahaha :-) LauraPerego
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you commented Laura. I will NEVER sing in your presence EVER! Ha! Can't swim either by the way! x
DeleteI am a TERRIBLE singer! But I love to sing! And I sing all the time!
ReplyDeleteI am also a TERRIBLE dancer but I also love to dance!
Oh well!
Oh the singing/dancing thing just isn't fair. We should get one of those at least! :)
DeleteMy son tells me to stop singing along to stuff as well! I sing, but not as well as I think I do (I've got the 'look' from my husband too!) I am really uncoordinated when it comes to sport, I used to wish I could find just one sport that I would be awesome at, but alas no. Terrible at every single one.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, sport not my forte either! I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets the look! :) x
DeleteMy two year old yells out, stop, stop, when I try to sing so it makes me very self conscious but for some reason I do, perhaps I do sound terrible...x
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's a two year old thing? Here's hoping! x
DeleteI sound awesome when I sing on the toilet...ok the echo in the bathroom helps but I love to belt it out in there. Thanks for linking up today hun xx
ReplyDeleteToilet singing, huh? You make me laugh Sonia x
DeleteHaha, my son doesn't like my sining either...hmmm, maybe it's just a 2 year old thing and we are all just awesome singers...I'm pretty awesome in the car ;)
ReplyDeleteI like your thinking Rachael. I do believer I sing my best in the car! x
DeleteSuch a nice post! I had to laugh, as "Popette" does the same thing, she always says "Mumma don't sing". I'm sure I was supposed to be a rock star! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! I laughed while writing this post! I figured I must be terrible if my two year old noticed! x
DeleteOh yes! I'm completely convinced that I was meant to be singer - just like Rachel in Glee... but something happened on my way down from Heaven and someone else got my talent by mistake. I still have the diva hand movements though, at least I didn't lose those too ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha! That's hilarious Jess! I'm just as convinced as you x
DeleteI'm absolutely sure I was meant to be able to sing (and draw and paint).
ReplyDeleteI was banned from the school choir too...and I always had to tell my examiners in my piano exams to skip the voice part and give me zero
My darling children love my singing though...maybe they are tone deaf too
Had Karise on mog since you wrote this and loving her voice so much
x
