Choose
When I woke yesterday one word was on my mind... choose.
Choose your day.
Choose how you spend your time.
Choose your emotions.
Choose your words.
Choose your destination.
Choose to breathe.
Choose to see love.
Choose to be love.
Choose to write.
Choose to read.
Choose to share.
Choose to sit in silence.
Choose to dance.
Choose to witness this very moment.
Choose calm.
All in a choice.
One I have.
One I choose to give thanks for.
xx
{Yesterday I chose play over work, I chose peppermint tea and splashing in the water at the beach with my girls. I chose to look to the sky with wonder in my eyes. I chose to ask for help, and to give thanks for it. I chose to meditate, to journal and to practise yoga. I chose to turn my phone on silent. Today I will choose to remind myself to breathe. And to just be. Elisa x}
What do you choose?

This is life
After weeks of taking things intentionally back a step, and letting our unscripted days unfold in the gentlest ways, the pace of our days has gained a momentum quicker than I hoped.
I'm fitting in work hours in almost all my spare moments. And I'm squeezing in just enough time for work to be grateful that this work is being offered to me, and to be grateful for all the minutes of my days that are spent doing things I love with the people I love and letting my soul shine.
Our week of slow, family time {and my lack of a mobile phone and internet connection for four days} offered so much clarity, but also left me with questions and decisions to make.
Some are made, some I'm letting unfold slowly, gradually, in time. It's taking a whole lot of mindpower and trust to surrender control. But I am. Slowly.
And I keep telling myself that this is life: sometimes crazily busy, always emotion-filled, and slow and mindful at other times. And I remind myself each and every moment is part of a rhythm. And it's about creating pockets in each day that are filled with the rhythms I dance to best.

Unscripted
With sick lingering here for longer than I would have thought {much longer than I'm happy about}, there's been a whole lot of home time and pretty much no script to our days.
I wake up and wonder what the day will bring, and I throw up a couple of options out and see what the little misses like best.
Sometimes we do a whole lot of nothing. Lying on the ground reading books, and lying on the ground with them lying on me.
We bake our bread together. I plan nutritious immune-boosing meals for our days, and my girls make soup {to make us all feel better} in their play kitchen.
But often we make our way to the beach. Miss three requests visits to the water, almost as much as my heart does.
When it rains we watch the waves from the car. And when it's windy, we make our way to the lookout. If it's sunny, we'll run on the sand or watch the sun dancing on the water from afar.
On Wednesdays we keep heading to the market, and wander rugged up down the street.
We buy daffodils and jonquils, and I sip hot chocolate while the girls play at the park.
And every night {after reading their two favourite books} my angels fall asleep in my arms.
And then I find myself getting out of bed to finish work commitments, but not getting to write from {and for} my heart.
We haven't seen much of the people we love to see this past month, we haven't had the out-and-about rushed that comes with normal weeks and I haven't been afforded the time to hit the publish button when I do write.
But always before I fall asleep I notice how our unscripted days of late are filled with heart moments.
And while at times I feel like I haven't been able to catch my breath, I think in a way it's what I needed.
Because in the not-knowing and the lack of planning, I've been propelled to move further out of my comfort zone, be even more selective with my time, to trust and move further in the direction of my heart.
So many things have been thrown up in the air this month, but it's starting to feel like that only happened so things could land the right way up.
xx
How have your days been of late? Do you stop to notice all the heart moments collected throughout your week?

By the water
In the spirit of a little less staring at the computer screen, a little more staring at the water, we headed to the beach this past week.
Not once, but four times. It was as though the water was calling us to return.
And I had forgotten just how much I adore the beach in winter.
When all sounds bar the roaring of the waves are forgotten.
The mesmerising colours of the sky and water, different each day.
The rhythm of the water, inviting me to witness the seasonal rhythms around me, and transform my internal rhythms of the day too.
The clarity that comes from a change of scene.
And that alive feeling that comes from running through the wind on the sand on a sun-shining blue-sky winter day with your two little people laughing and running beside you.
xx
{Photo taken into the sun while we ran on the windiest sunny day at our closest beach. It was magic. When I arrived home I heard the weather warning that winds of 100kph were hitting coastal areas. Timing is funny like that. Because had I known earlier, we most definitely would not have gone. Elisa x}

Ten on ten {finding beauty in the ordinary}
Ten on ten :: one photo an hour for ten consecutive hours on the tenth day of the month. A way of finding and capturing life and beauty in the ordinary things in our everyday.
1. Stepping outside to check the weather, admiring rain drops on the grass.
2. The girls helped make orange juice, and created an orange juice mess too.
3. Making shadow puppets is her new favourite thing to do.
4. The view from our front door. Giving thanks for this winter's bright blue skies.
5. When we drove by and saw the water's colour, we just had to stop.
6. Deep and meaningful chat with miss three {almost four!}
7. Stealing a sip of mummy's tea {and crumpling the cup too}.
8. Loving that after three years we now have lemons on our tree. This one became my cup of tea.
9. Spotting the moon and the last of the sun's shine as I put the rubbish out.
10. Finally unwrapping our new canvas - my favourite shot from our wedding {of seven years ago!}

Inward
I thought it was just me that was turning inward lately. But after chatting online with my friend Julie, I'm thinking there may be more to it. An energy shift of late... perhaps the change of season to winter here.
It's calling me to pull back, retreat, reconnect, ground. To go slowly. To settle right where I am. And to enjoy where I'm at. To not move forward. To stay still for a while. And a while longer.
Whatever it is, I'm going with it. Writing for myself. Reconnecting with the printed word. Getting out of bed slowly, and going to bed earlier. Meditating whenever my girls allow. Taking notice of all the good around me, and then giving thanks for it out loud.
xx

{Also I'm excited and grateful to mail out the first of my prints in the last couple weeks! So excited to think of them inspiring others and in people's homes. Oh, and this month the code inspire20 will take 20 per cent off all my prints here too xx}

These Autumn days
Farewell Autumn.
I already miss you.
I already miss you.
Your crisp mornings
and your mesmerising colours.
and your mesmerising colours.
Watching the trees transform,
leaves dance in the wind and
the way you perform change with grace.
I'll miss sunset walks
and bright-blue cloudless skies
the way you perform change with grace.
I'll miss sunset walks
and bright-blue cloudless skies
on the chilliest of days.

Words & Moments {in gratitude}
So much gratitude in my days of late. Recorded in my mind and thoughts as I think a lot about balance and how quickly moments pass and my girls grow. Mostly I'm trying to take each day as it comes, to move slower when things feel rushed. And I'm carefully planning a busy working month ahead to include spaces where we will do nothing extra.
As well as writing my gratitude this week, I'm reminding myself to speak it too.
Gratitude for:
Stopping - This week has been fast with less pockets of slow than I had hoped for. But each day I've stopped for a minute {sometimes a little more} to just be. Even if it's only to be mesmerised by the sky.
Sunset - This week rugged-up my girls and I walked to the park and sat to watch the sun go down, turning to look behind us at the already-up moon.
Creativity - a cardboard box became a baby dolls' bed and my girls couldn't have been happier with their co-sleeping little family. "Sweet dreams babies" miss three whispered as little miss 20 months rubbed their foreheads and kissed them gently.
Photography - I keep noticing little details, and this week I took my camera out to capture them. I'm loving the creativity and stillness it brings. It's beginning to feel a little like meditation.
Photos - On Mother's Day, my dad took photos of me and my gorgeous girls. I keep looking back at them, and can't help but smile.
Yoga - Friday's class reminded me to pause and to witness where I am right now, and to enjoy the journey as well as the destination.
Work - I'm very grateful for the work I have right now. And I'm trusting that with a little nudging balance will sort itself out.
Moments - So many little moments have felt big to my heart this week. I'm giving thanks for all of them. Especially spending one-on-one time with both my girls. That undivided attention nourishes all of us.

Little moments {that are big to my heart}
Little things are making me happy this week. It's always the little things, isn't it? Or maybe the little things are the big things. I say they're little because mostly they're just fleeting moments or thoughts, or just one minute of my whole day and sometimes everyday ordinary experiences... but to my heart, they feel big. And in my mind, I try to lock away that feeling and hold onto moments and memories in the hope they may forever feel new.
... A trip to the park with just the little girl. Her strength and determination to climb the ladder, and her excitement at going down the big slide on her own. Those big eyes shining even brighter and bigger, her cherub face bursting into that one-dimple smile.
... Stopping in my tracks to look down {when always I look up}. Feeling grounded, connected and happy with my place right now, right here in this world.
... Cloud watching in the morning, and spotting that same funny vertical cloud hours later in the afternoon. Being reminded that sometimes things change quickly before you get a chance to fully appreciate them. Giving thanks for opportunities and experiences that get to be witnessed, enjoyed and experienced a second time, and sometimes again and again.
... Miss three and I looking at ourselves cheek-to-cheek in the mirror. Laughing together. Holding hands. Brushing each other's hair. Consciously stepping back for a moment to really see her, to really listen and take her in.
... A shift in my mindset allowing new possibilities to enter my world. Then accepting new opportunities, and giving thanks.
... And after a day of tantrums came these words from miss three: "You're the goodest, bestest beautiful mummy I've ever heard."

~ I've taken this week slow. {And in doing so allowed clarity and direction to present.} We've done what needs to be done {and very little extra}. It's been really hot here, so mostly we've lapped up these bright sunshine-filled days {that still feel a lot like summer} in so many ways. My favourite moment was two nights ago when my little miss three and I stood outside {hours past her bedtime} counting the stars. I am grateful for all this {above} & more this week. Elisa x

It takes a moment
I've had a week of slow days and nights.
But the moments have gone so fast.
I've found myself willing away time in anticipation of a new day {a fresh start and a better time}.
While moments have struck me with such force {I've had to hold on to my heart}.
It took only a moment to realise what I have {an abundance}.
It took only a moment for the world to spin {in a direction I didn't foresee}.
It took only a moment to speak words of thanks {I had been hiding in my head}.
It took only a moment to reschedule plans {and make room where it needed to be}.
It took only a moment of tragedy this week to see gratitude in a way I haven't seen it before.
xx
{I'm working on creating more intentional moments in my day. Choosing to see and listen and stop and love. Because they're the kind of moments I want to hold on to on slow days, and fast ones too.}

The end is near
I'm not one to want life to rush on by past me. Quite the opposite, actually. I'm all for soaking up moments and scents and stills of life {as I know it}.
I like moments, the moment {this very one} and pondering and breathing fully. Meditating, and saluting the sun in the morning. Laughing and listening {which requires reminding myself not to talk}.
This week I've lapped up moments, but I've let my head and heart wander ahead in time too. And I've seen {and felt} that the end is near {so so close} in so many respects. And my feelings have been a mixture of relief, excitement, anxiety and gratitude, too.
It was mostly excitement {and a little anxiety} as I waited for my little sister {at the end of her aid trip to Malawi, Africa} to return home on Wednesday night. But gratitude too. Grateful for her and the difference she {and so many others} has made. I sometimes wonder if she realises how big and beautiful what she's done really is. I'm grateful I can support her, and so so grateful to have her home too.
When my little girl spiked a fever on Monday, I didn't panic {my normal response} but trusted her body {and homeopathics} and offered her loads of love {and water} and readily gave the hundred or so "cuddles like a baby" she was requesting on the couch. She slept in our arms in our bed for the night, but at midnight when I slipped out of bed to get a glass of water I was grateful to hear little feet pitter-pattering along behind me. Even more grateful when I saw her big smile, and the "I love you Mummy" that went with it. She was feeling better, the end of this bug near.
This week I've navigated life around boxes, packed our life's things into boxes and lived out of boxes too. We're pretty much packed and ready to move {the end is near}. And I'm looking forward to the unpacking, because with that comes a new place, a fresh start and no packing, which means more time being just us {and just being}.
xx

Here life goes rushing by
I was having a good big old whinge to my husband on the weekend about time rushing by.
Time is rushing, I told him. It's going so fast, and I can't get everything I want done, can't see everyone I want to see. And the girls are getting so big, and time just keeps on rushing by. And I wish it would stop. Because everything is a rush.
Later that night I sat down to be still and meditate, and I focused on my breath, and I listened to my heart.
And I let my body slow down, and I let it be still. And I felt my body gently let go and dissolve the day's tension, and there I found calm and effortlessness and a sweetness I've come to believe is always there {if I peel back enough layers}.
And then it dawned on me. Time + Rushing. Time wasn't rushing. Not one bit. Not at all.
Time is time. And it doesn't rush for anyone. It doesn't slow down either.
Time is always at the same pace. But this rushing? Well that was me.
The thing is I'm good at rushing. Really good. I can get myself into a rushed confusion in less than a minute {and I could probably sweep you up in my rushing too}.
I can even busy about and get 10 ticked off my to-do list in a day {leaving me in an organised head spin}.
But while I'm a great rusher and busy may be an easy-to-fall-into state for me, it doesn't suit me. Doesn't resonate with me. Not one bit. Not at all.
For me, rushing means busy. And busy remembers to do almost everything, but often forgets what's most important.
So this week there will be less rushing, more stopping {to breathe}, walking slowly and going gently.
My body, mind and heart will thank me I'm sure.

The quiet
I lay down for 20 minutes today {doing nothing at all really, just being still}.
It took me a couple minutes to find still {after moving, shifting, adjusting my legs, stretching}. But I found still and there I stayed.
At first I thought about the clothes dryer {the items beckoning to be put away}.
Then I remembered the library books {due back today, or tomorrow, or yesterday?}
And then thoughts of sipping lemon granita in Italy {I'm not sure where that came from}.
And finally I noticed the quiet {two babies sleeping and no extra appliances buzzing in this house}.
I wondered if this was the sound of silence?
It felt like silence, and sounded like the quietest day I had felt in a long time.
And then I noticed my thoughts begin to slow, and I started sensing {not thinking}.
I noticed the sound of the wind gushing about outside the room {and the sound of leaves journeying across the garden}.
I heard a car approaching {then a car swooshing past, then a car in the distance}
I listened {wondrously} to a solo bird's fleeting song.
And then the wind outside stilled, and all I could hear was the sound my breath.
Gentle soft breaths filling me {long and slow breaths filling me}.
I followed the rhythm of my breath {until I became my breath} and drifted into sleep.
When I woke the day seemed clearer {and my body felt renewed}.
I woke after 20 minutes {but it felt like I'd only been gone for two}.

Finding me, finding you
As I wandered down the supermarket aisles this week, glancing at my smartphone shopping list and then darting my eyes back to the baby bundle sitting snug in my trolley, I couldn’t help but smile.
Her baby lips upturned, bright eyes glowing, and that beautiful smile. Baby Eve was staring wide-eyed and admiringly back at me. I was grocery shopping – not a task to be admired, I know. But I was most certain that in her stares I saw sparks of love, and glimpses of wonder and awe.
As I met her stare, I felt immense gratitude {and a whole lot of love}. The most placid, happy, smiling, joyful baby loves me, and wants me {and my boobs but that’s still counted as me, right?}.
So, while searching for gluten-free, low-sugar cereals, I got thinking about how I landed this effortlessly joyful, naturally calm, ever-so-content baby. Effortlessly joyful. Naturally calm. Ever-so-content. All the qualities I strive for in my every day {and often fail to include in my every day}. And here in front of me is this beautiful little girl possessing all of them.
My baby embodies the me I so desperately want to be. She’s only eight months old, but already she’s teaching me so much. I may not be able to capture joy, calm and bliss in my every day, but Eve can. And in her own graceful way, she's showing me how. And I'll be forever grateful.

Dancing to a new day
Each morning when I rise before the sun does at my little girl's insistence, I look outside {with tired and hazy eyes} at the dark still-night sky wondering what the day will bring.
And once miss two is sitting snug and rugged up on her little couch with a requested buffet of yoghurt, toast, cereal and milk by her side {all of which she demolishes} I take another peek at the sky.
And I can see the day coming now, the air is not so thick anymore and I can make out the grass and outlines of trees. But I can't see the sky - it's still glowing a darkest shade of night blue {as though lingering in night-time dreams while waiting for the sun to wake}.
And I feel a little the same {my body is waking up and moving around while my mind stays mesmerised in a dream of sleep}.
And as I make my breakfast and listen out for a baby's cries, I keep glancing out the window and watching the sky {gentle and calm, waking at it's on pace at the rhythm of the universe}. And for a few moments I try to remember what that feels like {waking spontaneously, gently, when my body sees fit}...
And then I begin scribbling and adjusting a list of things to do for the day, all the while spooning mouthfuls of cereal and negotiating a little girl who wants to eat my breakfast too. I look outside at a sky that's getting brighter, but still waiting for the day.
And then I hear my baby wake with a stir and a little cry that says cuddle me, hold me tight, feed me, kiss me, love me now {and effortlessly with joy and gratitude that's what I do}.
And scooped up into my arms in a morning dance, I kiss her tiny cherub face, and listen for the little feet that will be close behind calling out for "my turn".
And then the three of us skip down the hallway {with a baby on my hip, and a two year old's hand holding my fingers tight} ready to begin our day.
And then I notice the air outside is clear, the sky is awake and the day is here.
And I wonder where those moments before the day woke went, and when the time will come that I will watch the sky wake itself up in full {not in fleeting moments and in stolen glances through the window}.
And I wonder when the time will come that all three of us will skip outside {and hold each other tight} to watch the night sky dance with the new day.
And I wonder when the time will come that I will wake up to a sky that is already dancing to a new day.

On calm days and chaotic ones too
I drove home through pouring rain today, with the car
heater blasting warm air past my face to the two babies snoozing in the
backseats, and I got thinking about what was happening in this moment I was living.
That very one moment. That exact time {on a dreary rainy
Friday morning}. In that exact space {the car}.
And I realised it’s
never just one moment, but stringed together moments of captured emotions,
words said and thought, sights and sounds that are recalled...
There was the winter-style day consuming the sky and
filling it with dark sullen clouds. The constant
sound of rain pounding the windscreen and wind whooshing past. {And as
I let myself see the cold that was outside, I began to feel grateful for the
warmth inside}.
And then I glanced from the road to the beach: a blend of grey-green
sea water and crashing waves rushing at the shore. And black
birds skimming the white tips of the waves, hovering there before flying higher
then dipping down as the next wave approached, as if it was some
game. {And I felt grateful to live near the beach, and to witness the ways of
the water on clear blue-sky days and dark cloudy ones too}.
Around the corner from home, I got thinking about walking
through the door knowing my husband would be there, and
we’d have time to sit down for coffee, just the two of us. {And when we did, I
felt grateful for him, and grateful for time together without interruptions – I
wish I hadn’t got up so fast.}
Finally at home, I looked at the two blissful sleeping babies
in the car and I whispered I love yous I knew they wouldn’t hear. As I cradled
their sleeping bodies and placed them into bed, I soaked up their warmth and
baby scents. {And I felt an immense gratitude for the two little people I love
so much}.
And it was in those moments that I realised gratitude surrounds me
on calm days and chaotic ones too.

Happiness is here and here and here
I'm finding happiness in the strangest places, at the oddest times, and in moments that seem like nothing but feel like everything.
Inspired by the "Happy Days in May" project over at Seven Cherubs, I decided to keep a happiness journal this month. Each night I've recorded a little something that has made me happy each day. Just a sentence, fragment or two.
Now 21 days in, I looked over my happy notes and found most days my girls are my happy. No surprise there. I love them more than I knew possible, so of course they're giving me endless bursts of happiness.
But what did surprise me is the little moments of seeming nothingness that brought happiness to my body, mind and soul...
...Ten minutes of stretching in bed in the morning. Waking my body slowly, gradually, gently, with ease. {A contrast to the usual bound out of bed to get little miss two her fix of yoghurt and Dora}...
...Running outside in the grass barefoot at little miss two's request {I felt free, boundless, refreshed}...
...Sitting down for five minutes {and listening to the tick-tock of the kitchen clock, drinking a HOT cup of tea, and savouring two pieces of dark chocolate}...
...Lying down and listening to the sounds of close-to-silence for 10 minutes as my babies slept...
I had no idea my life had so much happy moments going on until I started recording it. And it's made me notice more and more that what we focus on, we create. Just like my focus on gratitude, this happiness caper is making life that little bit sweeter, lighter, healthier. I wonder what's next...

In my little girl's eyes
Motherhood is good for my ego. There you go, I've said it.
I've wanted to say it for ages. But the ego! With all my meditation and better health focus, I should be steering clear of my ego, breaking away from it, right?
But my babies are doing such a good job of boosting this mama up!
Because in my little girl's eyes, nobody* compares to me...
In my little girl's eyes, I've got the moves on the {Hi-5} dance floor {in truth, I still can't tell my left from right, but spinning, twists and turns will hide that from a toddler, and tone your body at the same time!}
In my little girl's eyes, my cuddles are the most amazing and essential for sleep {particularly the under the covers, let-me-strangle-you-mum-in-the-name-of-a-hug version}.
In my little girl's eyes, I am hilariously funny {every single one of my jokes ends in side-splitting, on-the-floor laughter. I'm that good!}
In my little girl's eyes, I can sing like no other {This is true, but I also am most-definitely tone deaf, and I'm thinking perhaps it's genetic?}
In my little girl's eyes, holding my hand means safe and comfort and love all in one {I know this because I see it in her smiling cherub face looking up at me}.
In my little girl's eyes, I'm always wanted {for reading, playing, rolling, jumping, sliding, running, walking, skipping, building towers, trying on my high heels, pouring milk and sharing hummus and crackers - every single one, all the time}.
Motherhood is boosting my ego - I'm so much fun to be around, so easy to love, absolutely hilarious, the best friend ever, brilliant at so many hard-to-do {for a toddler} things. And I'm wanted at all times {because I'm every one of these}.
This week I got a little mama cranky pants at being wanted for everything all the time. And I should be cherishing it. Every little part of it.
I sat back and sat still {once my babies were asleep} and realised that while I'm all these things now, I most definitely won't be all these forever - not in my little girl's eyes. And I know when the time comes that will crush me, and this ego will land back down on the ground {most likely with a thud}.
So for now, I'm grateful for a bolstered ego, and a little girl who thinks I'm all that, and more!

So, how's your ego travelling? And what are you grateful for this week?

Living a dream
I could make an endless list of all the little things I dream of sharing with my girls.
Some of these I've been thinking and wondering about for a long while now.
All the beautiful places I want to show with my girls {when the time is right}.
The moments I dream about us sharing together {when the time is right}.
The little things I want to teach them {when the time is right}.
This week I made now our time and began living some of the moments I've dreamt of sharing with Grace & Eve.
We saluted the sun {a yoga sequence} together. Little miss two copying thoughtfully, and baby seven months giggling as I tickled her tummy while I gracefully swept through the movements.
Little miss two and I held each other close in the backyard at night searching the sky for the moon. We smiled together at the moon.
On a cold and windy day we went to the beach to admire the waves crashing and rolling in. We laughed as the wind pushed our hair against our face and brushed our cheeks leaving us a little breathless. Little miss two was mesmerised by the water's movements. I was mesmerised by her, caught in her excitement and wonder I forgot to watch the waves.
This week I'm grateful I began living my dreams. Little as they may seem, to me these moments feel big, inspired and wonder-full.

What are you feeling grateful for this week?
